Chihyun is a visiting PhD student in the Bazant Group at MIT, joining from Seoul National University. He studies lithium-ion transport mechanisms within single-particle battery materials. At MIT, his work focuses on PDE-constrained image learning utilizing spatiotemporal lithium distributions of LFP and NMC to explore fundamental mechanisms of surface reactions and strain-associated diffusion. This builds on his previous research in the Jongwoo Lim Group, where he combined synchrotron-based operando soft X-ray microscopy with phase-field simulations to directly visualize lithium transport pathways, ultimately aiming to advance high-performance Li-ion batteries.
Chihyun received his B.S. in Energy Resources Engineering and Chemistry from Seoul National University. More broadly, he is interested in integrating machine learning approaches with operando imaging experiments and finite element calculations. In his spare time, Chihyun enjoys playing the drums and video games.
