Young Ko is currently a PhD student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT and joined the Bazant group in September 2023. He obtained his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Seoul National University in 2021, where he assisted in experiments with direct-injection compression ignition engines. Then, he received his M.S. from MIT in 2023 under the guidance of Prof. Evelyn Wang and Prof. Asegun Henry. During this time, he optimized passive hybrid cooling system that combines evaporative and radiative cooling in order to generate significant cooling power with minimal water consumption. Young currently focuses on thermal-fluidic engineering solutions for Li-ion battery safety and recycling, which includes studying fundamental mechanisms of thermal runaway and electrode rejuvenation. In his free time, Young enjoys watching baseball, traveling, and cooking.
